Shakespeare’s Globe

The word is God

Since developing the overall brand and visual identity for Shakespeare’s Globe in 2011, we have designed concepts and materials for each of the theatre’s annual seasons. In 2011, our team was given a creative challenge of biblical proportions: the Word is God season.

Once agreed, our concept was used for the season brochure, website, programmes, advertising (press and outdoor) and merchandise.

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, a series of plays – both Shakespearean and modern – were staged to explore the enduring power of dramatic language. We commissioned an illustrator to create an illuminated letter for each play, referencing individual themes and symbolism while creating a recognisable overarching style.

The illuminated letters were so original and attractive that one gentleman dropped into the Globe offices to request the artwork for a tattoo! They also were chosen to feature in the Creative Review Illustration Annual for 2011.
