Teaching the machine manners

Gordon Russell believed that the hand crafted tradition of furniture making could be combined with the possibilities of the machine. This fusion of design and technology was key when we built a new website for the museum that honours his work.

We also re-crafted the museum’s visual identity, creating an updated logo and colour palette

The Gordon Russell Design Museum was labouring under the burden of an expensive website that failed in its primary purpose: attracting visitors. It had invested in a content management system targeted at museums. This was excellent for providing comprehensive information around each exhibit, but limited its attractiveness to the public.

We redesigned the site with visitors in mind. We introduced interactive elements, such as a timeline, large photos of exhibits (replacing the thumbnails of the previous site), and an approachable tone of voice. Colours and typefaces echo Gordon Russell’s modernist heritage.
